Japanese Sub Attacks Along the California Coast During WWII

  • Osher Marin Jewish Community Center-Kurland Lounge 200 North San Pedro Road San Rafael, CA, 94903 United States (map)

Did you know that the west coast was crawling with Japanese submarines in the weeks following the attack on Pearl Harbor? They not only sunk a number of merchant vessels, but shelled the American mainland on more than one occasion for nearly a year. Join journalist and historian John Geoghegan for this revelatory look at the activities of the Japanese military off the coast of California during WWII.

John J. Geoghegan, author of "Operation Storm: Japan’s Top Secret Plan to Change the Course of World War II," will speak on this fascinating but little known period of American history using first person interviews he conducted with the surviving Japanese officers and crew who patrolled the California coast. Mr. Geoghegan's talk will be lavishly illustrated with photographs, maps, diagrams and illustrations of the ships, submarines, and Japanese naval personnel that stalked California.
